The Why: Real Estate

Within the past year, I’ve turned 30 and welcomed my second child into the world. Not unrelated, I also made an evolution in my career to work in real estate and community development full-time. Like any good Millennial, I had to spend a good amount of time contemplating what would be the most purposeful work for me and my family over the coming decades. I landed on real estate, and as such a broad industry, I wanted to share The Why and my approach to such a powerful industry.

Here’s the three motivators driving my passion and vision for real estate work:

Generational & Community Wealth-Building

Real estate is one of the foundational pillars in building wealth, or barriers to creating wealth. Both on a personal (remember the two kids I mentioned?) and on a communal level, I really wanted the next iteration of my career to build upon the past decade I’ve spent in the economic mobility space. I wanted the next decade to be about abundance, not scarcity, for myself and my people around me.

The Inner Workings of Urbanism

I’ve long been fascinated with what creates a good neighborhood, community and urban environment. The dive into real estate was an intentional movement into understanding and creating a thriving place through the built environment. As a small town kid, I recognize that good urbanism can be many dots, from minor to large, on the map of great places.

Third Spaces & Conviviality

Both the built and social environments of a place are made full by third spaces (not where we live, not where we work, but the spaces beyond). These spaces can look like a park or green space, a pub/bar, faith institutions, and hundreds of other iterations. For years, our society has not designed for the creation of vibrant third spaces, but we find ourselves needing them more than ever to tie together our social fabric. My work comes into harmony with the creation and activation of third spaces through the built environment (real estate), and bringing the hard fabric to life (DJing, events).

Thanks for joining me on the journey. Let’s talk more if you are interested.

Peace,

—Travis
